Are You an OT with Questions About Driving?
My client wants to drive, what do I do now?
Driving is quickly becoming one of the biggest goals for our clients. In many ways, it is the ultimate instrumental activity of daily living and most complex. If a client can drive, it opens doors for living independently and engaging in the community freely. Not being able to drive, or having to retire from driving has been linked to increased isolation, depression, and even decreased health.
As occupational therapy practitioners, our foundations with the OT practice framework make us ideal for:
- Addressing the topic of driving,
- Starting assessment & treatment for driving performance skills (vision, motor, coordination, sensory, & cognition), and
- Referring to a skilled OT Driver Rehab Specialist when the client is ready.
Sounds simple, right?
But I know there are often a lot of questions when it comes to addressing driving.
- What is my role
- What am I able to do?
- How do I test vision?
- How do I make sure my client is ready for a driving evaluation?
- Where do I find a driver rehab specialist?
If you have questions like these, we have answers!
I would like to invite you all to join and bring these questions to our Facebook Group: Driving Rehab for the OT.
This group is made up for OT practitioners and students. Some of us have experience and others of us have questions and we are all here to learn. Join us and add to the conversation!
