How do I help Turn my Parent’s PA License in for an ID Card?
Driving retirement is tough! Adding in trying to figure out how to turn a license in for an identification card can leave you confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed. Frustrations at the DMV can just make the whole process worse.
If it is time to help Mom or Dad turn in their driver’s license for an ID card, skip the lines and use the NEW updated PennDOT Form.
Steps to Turning that License in for an ID Card
If your parent no longer needs a driver’s license or should no longer be driving, Pennsylvania allows them to voluntarily give up their driver’s license. They can instead get an ID card that serves as official identification but does not authorize driving once the license is surrendered.
- Fill out form DL-54A. On this form is a section to indicate that the driver’s license is being surrendered in exchange for a photo ID. Make sure you attach the actual driver’s license to the application.
- Submit your application in person at your local PennDOT Driver License Center or by mail to PennDOT. Be sure to bring or include the form DL-54A, documents, and the license being surrendered.
- If the license is being surrendered for medical reasons, there is no fee. For any other reasons, you will pay a fee for the new Pennsylvania photo ID card. Check form DL-54A for the current rates.
- Get your Pennsylvania photo identification card after the paperwork is processed. If you mail it in, it may take some time. If you go in person to a PennDOT center, you’ll receive it during the visit.
Benefits of a Pennsylvania Identification Card
A driver’s license is a main form of identification to prove who you are. A photo identification card serves this exact same purpose, just without driving privileges attached. It still looks very similar to a driver’s license, which may help your parent to feel like they still have authority with the transition and just the general comfort of knowing they carry an official identification card.
With a photo ID in PA, you can also add a real ID for flying. If you parent is even in a situation where they are lost or need help navigating their surroundings, an officer can use this ID to see any associated medical condition flags so that they can help your parent fully.
